Pipetting and Transformation Lab Simulations

Pipetting and Transformation Lab Simulations

Goals for the Project

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, many regular lab activities were not available to undergraduate Biology students in the 2021-2022 academic year. We were approached by faculty to help recreate a few key lab processes via online interactive simulations for use in their lab-heavy courses.

How Did We Achieve the Project Goals?

The ITRC created two simulations: one focused on pipette usage, the other on transformation. For each of these simulations, we defined a colour scheme and design style, then created all assets used in the completed products. Using Articulate Storyline, we created a game-like interactive module where learners could perform essential processes, like selecting and adding pipette tips or setting timers properly for transformation processes. We completed rigorous quality assurance on these modules to ensure every learner received the training they would need to later succeed in the lab environment.
